Impact

I was just twenty years of age when I followed Terry Fox's cross-Canada run, called the Marathon of Hope, to raise money for cancer research. Terry had lost his right leg to cancer and, since I am also an amputee, his remarkable ability to run nearly twenty-six miles per day on an artificial leg had a powerful and positive impact on me. When he was asked "How do you endure the obvious pain you experience running on your prosthesis?" I will never forget his answer. He replied, "My leg only hurts when I take my eye off the next telephone pole". Terry had tremendous perseverance and defined focus. I am sure you would agree perseverance and focus have never been more important than they are today. Here is what I believe are the essential attitudes and actions needed to keep our eye on the "next telephone pole".

Inspiration occurs when our dream is so compelling it wraps itself around our heart. Success is then set in motion with emotional commitment to achieve our objective. This enthusiasm sustains us when facing unforeseen obstacles.

Motivation is activated when we wrap our mind around the desired objective. This intellectual commitment provides the determination to take the necessary action.

Precision. Our goal becomes reality when it is specific, measurable, and written. With precise clarity about who we are and what we want to accomplish, unlimited opportunities await.

Acquisition. Success breeds success. However, if our success is not refreshed, it can also breed complacency and indifference. To stay relevant in our changing world requires that we continue to "refresh" our success by acquiring new knowledge and expertise. As we get better our opportunities get better.

Connection. Possibilities are multiplied when we enlist the energy and encouragement of others. When we connect with like-minded people to share ideas, information, and resources, we accelerate the pace of our accomplishment.

Transformation. Realizing we are able do more and become more transforms discouragement into hope. Hope brings us strength, giving us greater courage, which in turn, leads us to greater possibilities = Inspiration.

Positively,
